Pete Preps for Perfs

Report from Pete Wager in eastest London

Results from the weekend - raced at Hog Hill finishing 6th and I haven't shaved the legs yet!! but the date is set for Wednesday 4th Feb :))

19 E12 riders lined up for the 7th round of the Hog Hill Winter series National B race (1 hour plus 5 laps) held at the Redbridge Cycling centre in North East London.

Race under way and I puncture in the first 200m - brand new Tub!!!! Wheel change and I'm back in and attack off the front for 3 laps of lone lung bursting effort only to be caught by the bunch. Immediately David Barnes, East London Velo/EE, with his recently acquired 2nd cat licence attacked and was to stay away for most of the race. In the bunch all eyes were on series leader, Andy Davies- Fit For and ex-pro Flavio Zappi, Oxford Uni CC, winner of last week's race.

All moves were covered and the bunch eventually caught the loan leader with around 10 laps to go. Unfortunately he then punctured along with Andy Davies in the last 5 laps both unable to rejoin the race. London Dynamo wound up the pace on the final laps and it paid off with them placing 3 in the top 4 at the finish. I managed to hold onto a reasonable 6th place in the uphill sprint and an improvement on last weeks 12th place. All good preparation of Perfs Pedal Race on Feb 8th. ( 4 more races left in the series)

Terry's Fall at the weekend

I missed the ride, but for those who helped Terry Morgan get home on Sunday here's the latest on his injuries following the 3 man pile-up.

Terry has a fracture of the radius right in the wrist and not a break thankfully. So will be on Turbo trainer for a few weeks. He says he managed to fall on his hand and somersault onto his back so has road rash down the back of each leg, knee and elbows!!!

Terry says "thanks to all the well wishers and help on the day. but I am hoping that it is not going to be along drawn out process of recovery."

Yes LVRC team support duties are just around the corner!

Ottaway The Next Elverson?

Mark Ottoway won at Fowlmead on Sunday and was 3rd at Upavon the day before………that’s 2 wins and 5 top 6 placings in a month!!!! Is he another Elverson

UPAVON 3/4ths Report - Sat 17th January

The third and fourth category races bucked the trend of riding around in a large bunch with the occasional lone rider off the front. Early on in the race a small break developed containing some very strong riders who had obviously prepared well in the off season. The break contained John Russell (Bad Tri), Tom Stockdale (MJS racing), Mark Ottaway (VC Meudon),Garry Clarke (Banjo Cycles) and Russell O'Shea (DH Cyclesport). Behind these were a twosome containing Clive Jarvis (CC Basingstoke). The remainder of the field was in the bunch.

The break worked very well together with all riders making an equal contribution throughout. This work ethic allowed them to steadily pull away from the bunch and at half distance they had 40 seconds. The twosome doggedly worked to try to get on terms with the break and despite tracking them lap after lap their energy levels faded in the strong winds and towards the end they drifted back into the bunch. At about this point, consistent strongman Russell O'Shea punctured and this put paid to his chances. The break coming into the last few laps were well over a minute ahead and sensed that imminent victory was theirs however their sensible riding ensures that they did not take their eye of the ball and start to play cat and mouse.

Coming into the final straight it could have been anybody's victory but it was John Russell who had the legs to take the victory from Tom Stockdale and Mark Ottaway, Garry Clarke (Banjo Cycles coming in 4th place. Over a minute later Matt Steen (Colourtech RT) led in the bunch sprint from Clive Jarvis who had just enough time to recover from his long pursuit of the leading break.

Position Name Team Time
1 John Russell Bad Tri 1.01:47
2 Tom Stockdale MJS Racing ST
3 Mark Ottaway VC Meudon ST

Newall, Morgan, Addison in Top 10 on Boxing Day

While Jamie was racing to a fine 4th place in the Southampton Boxing Day Cyclo Cross race, yours truly was blowing away the Christmas cobwebs battling the cold in the Haslemere Boxing Day Run. The traditional event attracts hundreds of runners and features "non-drinkers and "drinkers" categories. The drinkers run the same 3.5 mile course but have to down a pint of bitter about 1 mile before the finish.

Fellow VCM member Stuart Morgan ran very well to finish 7th in the non-drinkers race.
While I suffered on the hilly terrain until the pint of Hogs Back Tea revitalised me enough to put in a spirited surge to finish 10th on the line. Pictures below of Stuart leading me away from the start and my pit stop in the woods.
