Pete Wager rides AW Road Race

Morning chaps!

Here is a little report on the race.....

AW Cycles RR 2009

70 riders lined up for the 2009 AW Cycles road race in clear blue skies and sunshine but with a reasonable breeze in the air. The circuit was on a modified course due to road works which removed the 12% Goring climb. This was replaced with a 17km circuit that included a 5km section on very exposed rolling roads with a long drag to the finish. The race consisted of six laps of the circuit for a reduced total distance of 65 miles, primes on the 2nd and 5th lap.

The race started with a plenty of attacks, lone moves and groups getting some gaps but nothing really stuck especially when the race headed into the exposed 5km section up to the finish area and the long drag to the top of the circuit. Up the drag the race was splitting but always came back together on the fast descent from the top section of the course. 2 laps to go and I led up the drag trying to get a split and succeeded as we got to 6 riders went passed me and I hesitated (AGAIN) expecting to see the bunch close behind. However, there was enough of a gap for the group to escape and I was stuck between so tried to chase on. 6 vs 1 and the group pulled away so I cut my losses and waited for the pursuing bunch. The lead group were nearly caught and another 2 riders managed to bridge across and they extended the gap to the finish.

This left the remaining places for the bunch to fight out. Into the final KM's and with a tow to the front from my brother I was set for the sprint. It was an endless drag to the finish and I managed to come passed a few to get 4th in the bunch sprint and 12th overall. My sprinting appears to be improving!

Vets Race Reports

Finsbury Park RR. Round 3 of MStina series.

Craig Wilson's Report

I was the only CV entry in the Finsbury Park RR in Essex. How would he cope without the CV squadra and lead out train. The 60 mile race was on a flat course and on lap 2 of 6 a 2 man break formed. With 2 laps to go a 4 man chase group formed which included Craig. It soon caught the 2 leaders and after losing one the break (all Bs with Meilak stuck in the bunch) built a lead of over a minute. In the last km Andrew Bates sneaked away and Craig beat the rest(O'Grady, Caton) to take 2nd. Part Time CV Rob Kennison won the bunch sprint to take 9th. In the overall series O'Grady and Caton lead with 3 counting event.

Keith Brooks' Report
Did I ride the same course as Wilson? It was supposed to be flat Essex but it rolled a lot and all the locals knew where to go hard to make it hurt. It seemed everytime I hit the front (yes I know that’s odd) it went round a bend and up another drag with everyone going past me.

Ex Vets World Champ Tony Woodcock went away on the first lap, two of us chased nearly got him but he went again and we thought it was over. However a lap later and he was in sight and he was pulled back by the 50 up field.

Lots of attacks all the time then with two laps to go CVs Phil Masters and Paul Shoebridge did hard turns at the front but as we hit the drag a huge purge by ex pros Woodcock, McMillan and Smith took a group of 10 away just at the wrong time for Phil and Paul who found themselves in the back group.

10 miles to go and Reg Smith attacks and we watch him go…he did a 59min 25 in March so clearly on form…never to be seen again. Sprint for 2nd place, I keep a close eye on the two locals, Woodcock and Devine, and manage to slip past them both with 100mts to go for 2nd place for the second week running.
Phil Masters and Paul Shoebridge came in with the bunch.

Get Well Soon Dunc

Last week Duncan Hards had a coming together with a large car in Guildford. The impact sent him on a "15m superman flight" and he's pretty banged up (broken wrist, injured knee, plenty of road rash etc etc) You can see from the remains of his bike that it wasn't a minor scrape by any means.
Give him a call, send an email or comment on this post to aid his recovery.

Martin Hulbert wins Vets Race

Riding in the Henfold Hill LVRC race on sunday Martin blasted up the finish hill to beat his 2 breakaway compatriots to win the 46 mile race. Martin was away in a break with Tony Woodcock (Glendene) (2 x Vets 60+ World champion) and Dave McMullen (Evans Cycles), while chasing close behind was Bob Moore who won his battle for 4th 5 seconds later.

Other riders doing well in Ciclisti Vecchi colours were Keith Brooks, Craig Wilson, Ben, Fraser and Gianluca all placing high up in their categories.

Dave - close 2nd in Archer Spring RR

No bad luck this week for Dave ( apart from a photo finish decision that went against him) - and a superb 2nd place in the Archer Spring RR.

Dave's report ..
It was a good race. First time up whiteleaf we lost about half the bunch, 2nd time there were only 14 of us and that’s how it stayed until about a mile to go when 3 guys manage to clip off. I didn’t want to chase them as I was being watched. Luckily Andy Betts went after them so I jumped on his wheel and went for it down the finishing straight I was flat out as the leaders were tiring, unfortunately the line needed to be a few inches further away. We couldn’t call it until they looked at the photographic evidence and Cameron had just got it.

Stuart Morgan - Goodwood Duathlon (NEW PIC)

Stuart Morgan competed in the Goodwood Duathlon yesterday.
"Blowing a gale, but at least it wasn't snowing like last year!"
Stu managed 3rd overall (bloody kids!) but managed to win the ol' farts section.
"Run was a bit of a struggle (no surprise considering I don't any more!) but thankfully the second fastest bike leg got me home."
Top marathon runner Hayley Yelling blasted everyone bar one in the run section but her bike riding left her down in 12th by the end.

RichardsTop 10 in TT

Sneaking off to ride the Alton CC 50km TimeTrial over the Easter w/e, Stephen Richards recorded a fine 7th position clocking 1hr 16m 49s (winner was Julian Jenkinson in 1hr 11m 06s)
In the 2-up event that ran on the same course Richard Prebble rode with Sean Yates to win in 1hr 08m 58s

Reports from Easter 3 Day

Report 1 - Dave's flat 3 day

Dave Creeggan reports from the hardfought 1/2/3 race where he managed to salvage a good result despite some disastrous luck:

"My 3 day was a disaster! I was in the front group at Milland on day one but punctured with 1 mile to go and lost 5 minutes. At Cutmill I lead out the sprint and my back wheel punctured about 30 meters from the line, managed to get 3rd though. Day 3, went for broke, got into a break and then punctured with a lap to go. Brand new tyres and 2 different wheels! Hopefully my luck will change soon!"

Also putting in some solid rides were Pete Wager and Warren riding for the Felts in the points on stage one.

Report 2 - Addison from the Rear

Easter 3 Day - 3rds

After all the suffering I went through in my two stage races last year I was determined to train a bit harder over the winter; so after some skiving on Thursdays, plenty of trips to Mint Condition for gym work, a training weekend in Northern France and a bit of sensible eating (not too much!) I lined up with Hulbert, Hards and Franklin for the first stage of the Easter 3 Day at Milland on Easter Saturday.

This is very much a view from the rear of the race - if you want a perspective from the sharp end then someone will have to harass one of the others into putting some words down.

I was feeling quite confident before the start after a threshold test earlier in the week showed me some encouraging figures, but as soon as the race kicked off it didn't feel good. The pace was high and I struggled up the first ascent of Milland on my 23 ( too high in hindsight: I never worry about gearing for Surrey Leagues, figuring that if you can't get up the hills on a 21/23, you're not going to win anyway - but it might have helped me hang on for a bit longer) Second time up and was loosing the back of the bunch - they were only a few yards ahead but onto the old A3 and the gap stretched away - I found myself with 5 or 6 other losers - deciding to ride on as best we could and avoid being lapped. Managed that and came in 49th 17mins down - not a great start. Martin tried a few speculative attacks on the flat sections (apparently) and Darren shot up the final hill for 7th with Duncan 12th - good results. You can see from the pics on BC how strong the leader was - 3rd Cat - I think not!

Stage 2 - 9 times up Cutmill and a bit of a longer warm up resulted in a much better ride for me. Never in contention for any attacks, but not in danger of getting dropped up the climbs. The only scary moment came when the hammer went down at the front to bring back the early break. The rear of the field was shedding riders on the flats so had to chase back after I was taken out of the back a couple of times. Finished with the bunch. Happier. Both Duncan and Darren finished well, about 30s ahead of me and were both in with the chance of a top 10 GC finish.

Stage 3 - finally some dry roads and a 60mile jaunt around the Alfold circuit awaited. A strong Velocity CC rider who was still smarting after suffering punctures on an earlier stage tried to undo his deficit single-handedly and attacked from the start to gain 2 minutes by the end of the first lap. Duncan was feeling good too and got into a chasing threesome that also gained time. But the masses of Kingston and the London Dynamestiques were having none of it and the speed was cranked up midway to bring everyone back together. I felt even better on this stage and rode well until it came to the mad final sprint. How fast was that? Sprinting in the 12 on the downhill sections after Plaistow just to stay in the mix. I never got anywhere near the front so was easing to roll in when a car on the opposite side passed the manic bunch which was in full cry 200m from the line. A switch and swerve and riders were heading for the bushes and frames were breaking. I managed to weave through the carnage to finish on the same time for another OK day. Martin was one of those who tasted the Hawthorn while Darren muscled his way through for a fine 11th with Duncan 15th.

Overall I ended up 33rd 20 mins down. Duncan rode very well for his 9th on GC @2:30, Darren, gaining confidence all the time, was close behind in 12th on GC @2:57 while Martin finished 29th @3:52

See the BC site for other (mixed up) reports and loads of pictures.
