Pete 2nd in London Champs

Pete Wager reports:

"The Nick Clark RR doubled up as the London RR Champs held at Leighton Buzzard, Beds on June 21 by Kenton RC.

79 riders lined up for 130km (8 laps) on the Cheddington circuit with sunny but breezy conditions. After a few weeks of feeling under the weather and focussing on the new TT bike I was hoping just to get round and get some good racing miles back in the legs. Attacks went from the gun with everyone chasing all the moves - until around the 6th lap a few riders were getting clear over the climbs but getting pulled back on the decents and long flat sections. Last lap and 5 riders went clear including Martin Ford, Dan Patten, Warrick Spence, Andy Betts and one other. Pace remained high in the bunch but it was never going to catch the lead group with Sigma Sport controlling every move to protect Andy Betts.

In the final KM's I secured my position on the front of the bunch ready for the head wind sprint for the line. Warrick Spence touched wheels as the lead group opened up the sprint and came down so it was 2nd place available for the next London based rider as we passed him getting back on his bike. I went for it early and managed to hold of Lewis to take the silver medal and 10th in the Nick Clark. Not a bad return to racing!"

May rider of the month is.....

Keith writes:
"May’s rider of the month award goes to Pete Wager who has been battling away all year against some top opposition. After successfully promising that he would get his 1st cat licence and then shave his legs in 2008 Pete had a tough baptism to top flight races when he rode the Perfs back in Feb….however he has raced hard and has raised his game to keep the competition on their toes. This has really shown in the Eelmoor series during May when outnumbered by Felts, AWs etc Pete was consistently placed in the top 6."

..meanwhile @ the F&C 10m TT..

Won by top tester Nick Bowdler with a sub 20 minute ride three Meudons rode the Farnborough and Camberley 10 this week. Chris Day put in another strong ride to follow up on last week's 2nd at Eelmore to record a time of 21:15 for 3rd. One minute back was Steve Richards, rapidly getting back up to speed after several weeks off the bike with a broken collarbone for 6th. And a few seconds behind Steve was timetrialling legend and seventysomething British cycling institution John Woodburn.

Wily Wilson close @ Dunsfold

Regularly making the break in recent weeks Craig reports from Dunsfold where he narrowly missed the win this week:

"Should have won it - me and Toby Neave left for the sprint and I came off his wheel too early - got in front then he came back - gutted and Jamie gave me grief!!! Quite right actually - I sobbed myself to sleep.

Scratchicap but hard from the gun - the scratch group were flying and I thought I was on an "old man's day" as my legs felt grim. Caught the 3s and 4s and then numerous groups away, getting caught etc before it split with about 20 - 25 in front. The youthful Mr Brooks with his impeccable timing seemed to start the big split. In the front were numerous VCMs including Tony Mott who was going well along with Capello, Prince, Allen, Newell, Creegan - sorry if I missed anyone.

3 of us got away with 2.5 laps to go (me, Sussex and Irish guy). Toby jumped across with 1.5 laps to go and helped a lot. Toby jumped with about a mile to go and blew the other two out then I blew the sprint!! The team did their stuff slowing the bunch to a standstill so we could stay away - then dominated the sprint."

CANCELLED - Cycle Kingdom Classic

STOP PRESS - The Cycle Kingdom Classic - CANCELLED FOR THIS YEAR

Sadly we had problems getting our new course approved and, reluctantly, have decided to cancel this year's event - apologies to those who had the event in their race schedule and were looking forward to it. Back next year we hope.

There's not much else on that day in terms of road races for E12's unless you want to head up North for the Mike Binks, but you could look at The Devil Ride 100m sportiv in mid Wales which still had a some places left a few days ago.

It was a royal evening at Eelmore this week where the fight for the Cycle Kingdom was hotly contested once again. An early attack by Prince Newall and one of the Smith Dynasty was brought to heel and, despite the best efforts of his loyal courtiers, King Hoy could not repeated his win of earlier in the week at Upavon and heir to the throne Lord Lewis Atkins took the spoils with an audacious last lap move.

The fight for the Kingdom Crown continues for two more weeks before Prince Peter retires to his Summer Residence for a 4 week break.

Potholes - fixmystreet.com

With the shocking state of our local roads and at least one member attempting to sue the council, fixmystreet.com may come in useful. This allows you to easily report potholes/road damage, complete with measurements, pictures etc. This gives the council the problem and encourages them to fix things since there is then a public record of the evidence. There is also apparently an app for the iPhone which allows you to post a picture with your report and automatically records the location through the phone's GPS system.

Dave does Dunsfold

It's probably surprising that he hasn't actually won a race this year, but after a lots of top results, Dave Creeggan finally cracked it at Dunsfold last week. With Dave and Jamie looking among the strongest in the race they mopped up the majority of the prime points along the way. The normal flurry of breaks went and came back, notably featuring Dave Larcombe, until the last lap when Dave (C) managed to get away with a strong group with Craig Wilson along to keep the break motoring away. With the bunch nearly on the break Dave put in a strong finish to take the win. The top ten read a bit like a sprint for the Crondall sign on a clubrun with 5 Meudons and Nick Allen in the top ten.

Tubeless tires report

Ciclisti Vecchi Paul Shoobridge has been researching tubeless:

"I had been looking into using tubeless tyres for some time as the first reports from tests in the U.S had been very favourable but companies like Mavic and Michelin had dropped out after testing.
But this year campag and specialised put new wheels on the market to take tubeless tyres now Fulcrum have added wheels to there rang.
So after two years of deliberation I thought I would give it a go if it did not succeed I would have to tyres that I could still use tubes with. My local dealer Cycle Care in High Wycombe had all the bits I needed as Simon who runs the shop had run tubeless before.
The tyres are Hutchinson fusion 2 tubeless mavic valves and notubes sealing solution and valve extensions for deeper rims.
The wheels I am using are mavic e.s I think these wheels were built for tubeless similar to there mountain bike rims I.E no spoke holes on the inner top section of the rim
First you need to fit the valve to rim if you need extensions you will need to fit these after you put the valve on make sure the valve is seated in the well of the rim but do not over tighten the lock ring at base of the valve. The mavic valves are quite short but you can get longer valves from notubes in the states which I did over the inter net a very good service by them.
Fitting tyre to rim I had no problem with this at all.use a solution of soapy bubbles on the tyre and rim..First you mount tyre as normal on one side of rim other side fit valve section first to bed in bead of tyre leave gap of about five inches on rim now fill with notubes sealant using measure cup provided slowly turn wheel over so solution runs around tyre so you can fit rest of tyre make sure tyre home and pump up as normal.
Ok to sum up the first wheel was a learning process the second a doddle

I have now been racing for two months in all conditions with these tyres so far pretty good .
Points to note the tyres run slightly lower pressure than clinchers they do ride more like a tub and have less rolling resistance than clinchers 31% less ? I have read in one report.
If you do puncture you can just fit tube as normal to get you home.
But I am told it has to be a pretty big hole not to self seal
If you go to the notubes web site there is a great video on fitting the tyres."

Editor's note: For anyone interested in trying tubeless, Craig (at Cycle Kingdom) is fully up to speed on the new tires and rims - I even saw him manage to successfully explain to Brian in very simple words and actions how it works and how to mend one.
