July Round Up

Keeping everyone in touch with what's been going on this month ...

Jo Munden - National Champion!
Just in case you hadn't heard, Jo is the National Champion in the MTB XCountry Masters Female category after a great ride this month on the Pippingford course. Read more here http://bit.ly/dnuAod

Gabriel beaten 6 minutes!
A slightly cruel headline, especially when you hear Gabriel rode the Charlotteville 25 in just 53:57 - an average speed of 27.8 MPH! Two big names on the start sheet, Richard Prebble and Michael Hutchinson (he's on top form too - see here http://bit.ly/d0buxo) failed to start, but Alex Dowsett, the Trek Livestrong/Radioshack rider did start and blitzed the field with a 47:50

Warren and Steve dust off their bikes
Not seen in a race for quite a while, but Warren Jesse and Steve Richards both turned in creditable results this month. Warren placed 5th in a huge field for a 2/3 race on Bletchingly and Steve placed 6th in 35-39 age group at the recent British Cycling Masters RR Champs held at Southwick on 23rd July.

Jason competes for the overall at Goodwood
Down at Goodwood our new recruits Jason Edwards and Ashley Holding are racking up the points and placing well in the overall. Before this weeks race Jason was in 2nd Overall behind James Makepeace and Ashley was 7th, just behind Tim Costello, who is also riding well. If you can get down to Goodwood to support the campaign, please do. See the current overall standings here http://bit.ly/aOB76v

Looking for Small Road Bike

Does anyone have a small road bike for sale?

Kirk Chesley from Haslemere is looking for a 40cm size road bike for his son, who is too tall for a child size bike.

Contact Kirk on 01428 604788 or leave a comment or email me and I'll forward it on.

When Ken's ring was even bigger-picture special

If you thought Ken Ruffel used the big chain ring a tad too much for comfort sometimes, these photos suggests he's actually downsized since his days as a top London trackie. Ken reports:

"We were talking about tandem-racing and track-racing on the Wednesday morning run, so I dug out these old pics - see attached.

Pic 1: The Whitewebbs with Frank Westell (best soigner...ever!) We beat everyone in 1972, including the All London.

Pic 2: We talked about Yates & Hutchinson on the tandem. They didn't have a dinner plate like me & Claude had. We were fast, but not as fast as Sean and Hutch.

If you've any pics of your own, let's share them. It's great to see the old floppy brake cables, bendy shoes and woolly shorts!!

Chris cracks it

Chris Day reports from the evening 10:

"As many of you will know I've consistently been attending the A31 TT's and consistently getting a 2nd 3rd or 4th! Ok so last night I did have the benefit of Big Bad Power house Gabriel not being there!!! So as I was being held up at the start I said to the Time keeper!! I want this one! And I want to Beat Rob Hunter!! He said its not him you need to worry about its the man behind you!!! (Gawie Nienaber) I said holy shit is he fast? He said very! 54321 and off I went! All I could focus on was not being overtaken as I knew I was being chased down! I've gotten pretty used to knowing how my race is going by my ave speed at the turn around point! So when I looked down and saw 27.8 I know it was going to be a fast time! I also knew from then on the wind would be with me!! So I just kept going as hard as poss. I went past Frazer as he was out training then took Rob Collard and Stuart Worthing just before the Hen & Chicken. Only a couple more rises and a fast flat home!! As I reached the crown of the rise I looked at my ave speed!!! 28mph! looked behind ! No one in site!! So I rode hard with speeds around 35 mph (!) and watched my ave speed rise to 28.4 over the finish line and home! I was pretty sure I'd won! Had to wait for results!! Confirmed I actually won one!!

By 2 seconds!!! At last!!!
