Midweek roundup

Dunsfold this week was a nervous affair with a couple of crashes. With several riders fresh from the national 10 there were plenty of fast legs around. With Ben Instone bringing back anything dangerous, a bunch sprint was the order of the day with Tim leading out Justin for the win. With Jamie puncturing it was left to Ken Prince to fly the Meudon flag with a strong 4th, with myself in 7th and Keith Jarrett rounding out the top 10. Special mention to Steve Ferris, 1st smoker and 12th overall.

At Eelmore the Feltwash in the E12 continued with Tim Elverson winning again just in front of super consistent Jamie. The second group featured Dave Creeggan racking up another good result in 7th. Dave Larcombe clipped off the front of the bunch(lett) to ride the last 4 laps on his own for a good 10th. Myself and Pete Wager crawled in to take the last of the placings.

In the 3/4 Nick Allen sat the race out to make sure he doesn't get moved up a category leaving the race a bit more open. Andy Dilkes put in strong performance to get second (still riding a Hannah's bike?) with Max Harris in 9th and Colin Addison in 10th (on his cross bike).

Moore Bob success - at Nationals

Bob Moore, Brian Hoadley and Steve Barnsley at the LVRC National Crit Champs.

Bob reports:
"The championships were held at Milton Keynes Bowl, a tough twisty circuit less than a mile long.

The race went from the gun with two riders getting away for a couple of laps. The sound of a bunch of 50 year old riders gasping and wheezing to get their legs to do something quick was a true joy but the front of the group worked to catch them. Then on the little rise thru' the start/finish line a break of five went, I jumped on and we all worked well to get away.

After about 40minutes six new guys got across to us including Dominic Gabellini, a sprinter of some renown. The pace remained high as we worked together less but jumped about more to try and break the group.

Steve was unwell earlier in the week and retired early and Brian became the victim of 'one gap to close too many' and climbed off after 45 minutes.

With the 3 lap to go board up, John French attacked and then crept away to a well deserved win on his own. Everyone watched it happen, seemingly content with runners up prize.

With 1 lap to go I was in third place in the bunch and as the riders in front peeled off I was stuck on the front for the last half lap. I jumped out of the last corner and had a gap, but despite Brian's encouragement the little rise earlier in the race was now much more significent and I faded into the headwind 50 metres from the line. Gabellini getting the silver and me slumping across the line in 5th."

Hillingdon - Barry shines

Darren Franklin reports from the W. London 4ths race where Barry Matthews got his 3rd cat licence.

"Barry had a convincing win at Hillingdon today. The first 6 laps and nothing happened, then a 5 man breakaway formed gaining 18 seconds, but with everyone working together they were soon brought back. A couple of one man kamikazee attacks ensued with the best staying out for 3 laps. With 3/4 of the final lap remaining Barry accelerated from 15th place opening up a 100 metre gap coming down the back straight. By the time they reacted it was too late and they were racing for second place, with Barry crossing the line comfortably ahead. Barry commented that he puts this feat down to a Mars Bar he had before the start."

Jo Munden wins at Palace

On Tuesday Jo made one of her regular forays up to Crystal Palace, but this time blew away the cobwebs of her frustrated ride in the South East Champs at the weekend to win the Tuesday night blast around the park.

The previous weekend Jo had tried to defend her South East Road Race Champions jersey around the Ellens Green circuit. Despite making the key break Jo, along with all the other fancied riders, played into the hands of the AgiskoViner track sprinter Emma Patterson. Finishing 7th, Jo is hoping for a hillier circuit next time around.

Dunsfold - Carry on Jamie

On Tuesday night it was Jamie Newall again animating the race, driving the scratch group to catch the 3s and 4s in record time, then driving the break and grabbing the primes before coming a close second to Steve Calland in the gallop. Ken Prince ended a run of 3 11th places in 9th. Before getting 11th again in the handicap on Thursday.

Eelmore - 2 wins (sort of)

The 3rds race split early with plenty of Meudons getting in and across to the right end of the race. With the sprint approaching no-one was going to bet against Nick Allen and so it happened with Nick leading home, with Bob Moore and Andy Dilkes in 5th and 6th.

In the E12s club sponsor (but riding for the Meudon feeder club Felt Racing) Tim Elverson powered home first, clipping away in the final laps to follow up on John Wager's win the previous week. Dave Creeggan rode strongly to get across to Tim with Adrian Lansley, getting second in the 3 up sprint, with Jamie continuing his run of results in 5th.
