Here is a little report on the race.....

AW Cycles RR 2009

70 riders lined up for the 2009 AW Cycles road race in clear blue skies and sunshine but with a reasonable breeze in the air. The circuit was on a modified course due to road works which removed the 12% Goring climb. This was replaced with a 17km circuit that included a 5km section on very exposed rolling roads with a long drag to the finish. The race consisted of six laps of the circuit for a reduced total distance of 65 miles, primes on the 2nd and 5th lap.

The race started with a plenty of attacks, lone moves and groups getting some gaps but nothing really stuck especially when the race headed into the exposed 5km section up to the finish area and the long drag to the top of the circuit. Up the drag the race was splitting but always came back together on the fast descent from the top section of the course. 2 laps to go and I led up the drag trying to get a split and succeeded as we got to 6 riders went passed me and I hesitated (AGAIN) expecting to see the bunch close behind. However, there was enough of a gap for the group to escape and I was stuck between so tried to chase on. 6 vs 1 and the group pulled away so I cut my losses and waited for the pursuing bunch. The lead group were nearly caught and another 2 riders managed to bridge across and they extended the gap to the finish.

This left the remaining places for the bunch to fight out. Into the final KM's and with a tow to the front from my brother I was set for the sprint. It was an endless drag to the finish and I managed to come passed a few to get 4th in the bunch sprint and 12th overall. My sprinting appears to be improving!
