VCM 4th Squadra off to a flying start

Ian Franklin reports from Dunsfold:

"Ten Meudon riders on the start line of the 50 strong field.
Dean Corney
Ian Franklin
Gary Hampton
William Lane
Simon Laws
Kevin O'Neill
Paul Nelson
Dan Smith
Colin Stevens
Pip Taylor
Several little attacks occurred but they all came to nought because of the nagging wind. With a mile or so remaining Dan Smith made a break for it but was reeled in on the long finish straight. In the hectic sprint Kevin O'Neill proved the strongest taking first place. Paul Nelson came in fourth and Simon Laws in seventh. The rest of us all finished in the bunch.

Congratulations to Kevin who got his points to go 3rd cat.

There are another eleven events to go so if you are a 4th cat give the events a try."

Andy Grant injured.

Bob Moore has contacted us with news of Andy Grant:

"Andy G just phoned me to say he will not be training at Reading Track tonight, he is feeling unwell following a freak accident at work earlier today.

While bending down to fix a vending machine this morning, a coin dispensing mechanism
fell from within the machine and struck him on the top of his head and cut his face

I'll keep you posted but sadly there has been no change since........!!!"

Get well soon Andy.

Eelmore 3/4 finish video - Richard upgrades

New to racing this year Richard Unwin's had a good start to the season moving up from 4th to 3rd cat and now after some consistent finishing at Eelmore, to 2nd cat:

"The race went pretty steadily, no real breaks so down to a group sprint. I managed to finish 4th (again) with a Meudon behind me in 8th and another in 10th if i read the video right.

So that's me done with the 3rd cats, will have to up my game now if I want any more points out of Eelmore since I think the E12 race is a whole different ball game!"

Gabriel 20th in National '10' Championship!

We knew he was fast but how good is that?! Amazing result for an old 'un in the National 10 this weekend for Gabriel Martinez. In the event, won easily by Bradley Wiggins in 19:14, Gabriel was only just over a minute off 3rd place

Southern XC Series report

Michael Guilford competed in the Southern XC Series Round 3 at Wasing Estate. Here's his report:

"Having not done any XC since february, (4hr endurance race uugh!), I was expecting to find reasonably testing on handling skills.

At first glance the course seemed a like a cross course, however the organisers had actually done quite a lot with a fairly flat piece of woodland, roots had been dug out (exposed) , corners were plenty twisty and loose and a few bomholes added in. If this had been wet it would have been carnage in the sport and masters category.

A few steep climbs and swoopy descents made it fairly swift to pass through most of the sport category and led me quickly to 2nd place. I stuck with a small group of three for the first lap and a half, but overtaking the masters category was taking its toll, and i ended up slipping back to 3rd and riding on my own. This put 1/2 minute on my second lap time, and led me to be caught by the 4th rider. 10mins from the finish line a small blunder on my part, lost us time and my nerves. Along with poor attempt at a sprint finish, i rolled in at 4th, and missed out on the podium.

Next week I'll win!"

Gruppo Nick Allen

Having carefully followed the Colin Addison training programme (45mins turbo, 2hrs jogging and a spot of badminton) Phil Masters is raring to go after the 6km ride back from Pro Bike Hire.

Russel Scott: "I was very fortunate to capture on film Keith Brooks in full flight as a German cyclist foolishly tried to shake him off but Keith valiantly held on like a limpet, nice one Keith!"

Jim Orr flying up a climb. He's 58 you know.

Is the single room supplement worth paying? Recovering in my en-suite sitting room with a protein shake.

Cutmill is of course flat by comparison.

James practises his "maximum respect for the customer" look on Mark B (note lack of tan lines).

The debate begins at the top of Soller - who attacked first after everyone agreed to ride up together at a steady pace? (Rearrange the words Wilson and Craig for answer).

Dilkes and Addison kick back, relax and leave the high tech world behind them as they soak up the local ambiance.

Dave Larcombe breaks two of Bremner's Golden Rules here. He's developed distinct tan lines. And to compound this is wearing a vest. Here Dave entertains some young German girls in the Lufthansa check-in queue with a dance from his youth apparently called "The Hand Jive". Either that or he's talking about his idea for a book called "101 masturbation jokes".

Place in Wiggle Dragon - 6th June

From Adam Herridge...

I entered the Wiggle Dragon ride (heard of it?), the popular sportive, back in November as it sold out in less than a day. I want to concentrate more on racing and gearing my training towards that, so am not going to bother with it; I was wondering if anyone vcmeudon members be interested in it? I don't want to make any money, just what I paid for it..(not a lot, 30 quid or thereabouts), it just seems like a waste for nobody to use it as it's such sought-after event from what I gather.

It's on Sunday 6th June and I've got a room in a B&B 8 miles ish from the start if anyone wants one.

Let me know, via comment on this post,

Many thanks,

Adam

Nick Allen wins report/photo/video - Cutmill 15/05/11

Another report, video and photos from Adam Herridge, racing in the 3/4 race on sunday, won by the prolific 3rd cat racer Nick Allen.

A colder start to the day, with the sun threatening to poke its head through the clouds. A good turn out but with a few no-shows Nick Allen managed to get a number on his back at the last minute; giving us a good team turnout.

The pace car took us to the start of the race, making for a good warm-up, and the race was underway! No serious action up-front for the first couple of laps, other than one poor rider slipping up on the loose surface of the first corner.

Several laps and break attempts (not from me though!) later, there was a crash on the descent after the finish line caused by a wheel-eating pot hole. A couple of riders got tangled up, including Josh!

I’d seen a VC jersey go down in the tumble but didn’t know who’s; chatting with James revealed that it was in fact Josh. People at the front must have figured the group had split, and taken advantage of the situation by putting the hammer down. It was a pleasant surprise, when before long Josh was whipping up the side of the group again and back in line.

One lone rider had made it off the front two laps from the end, but was well absorbed in the pack by the time a lap had expired. The group stayed together until the final climb up to the finish where things got a little elongated; probably due to Nick Allen’s power drive up to the line, taking first place by some margin!"

Ed - Nice one boys!
