Tubeless tires report

Ciclisti Vecchi Paul Shoobridge has been researching tubeless:

"I had been looking into using tubeless tyres for some time as the first reports from tests in the U.S had been very favourable but companies like Mavic and Michelin had dropped out after testing.
But this year campag and specialised put new wheels on the market to take tubeless tyres now Fulcrum have added wheels to there rang.
So after two years of deliberation I thought I would give it a go if it did not succeed I would have to tyres that I could still use tubes with. My local dealer Cycle Care in High Wycombe had all the bits I needed as Simon who runs the shop had run tubeless before.
The tyres are Hutchinson fusion 2 tubeless mavic valves and notubes sealing solution and valve extensions for deeper rims.
The wheels I am using are mavic e.s I think these wheels were built for tubeless similar to there mountain bike rims I.E no spoke holes on the inner top section of the rim
First you need to fit the valve to rim if you need extensions you will need to fit these after you put the valve on make sure the valve is seated in the well of the rim but do not over tighten the lock ring at base of the valve. The mavic valves are quite short but you can get longer valves from notubes in the states which I did over the inter net a very good service by them.
Fitting tyre to rim I had no problem with this at all.use a solution of soapy bubbles on the tyre and rim..First you mount tyre as normal on one side of rim other side fit valve section first to bed in bead of tyre leave gap of about five inches on rim now fill with notubes sealant using measure cup provided slowly turn wheel over so solution runs around tyre so you can fit rest of tyre make sure tyre home and pump up as normal.
Ok to sum up the first wheel was a learning process the second a doddle

I have now been racing for two months in all conditions with these tyres so far pretty good .
Points to note the tyres run slightly lower pressure than clinchers they do ride more like a tub and have less rolling resistance than clinchers 31% less ? I have read in one report.
If you do puncture you can just fit tube as normal to get you home.
But I am told it has to be a pretty big hole not to self seal
If you go to the notubes web site there is a great video on fitting the tyres."

Editor's note: For anyone interested in trying tubeless, Craig (at Cycle Kingdom) is fully up to speed on the new tires and rims - I even saw him manage to successfully explain to Brian in very simple words and actions how it works and how to mend one.
